Symptoms of Depression in Patients with Chemosensory Disorders

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Patients with chemosensory dysfunction frequently report symptoms of depression. The current study aims to clarify whether the type (smell dysfunction, taste and mixed smell dysfunction), severity, duration, or cause have differential impacts on <b><i>Methods:</i></b> 899 patients disorders 62 controls were included. Following a structured interview an otorhinolaryngological examination, subjects underwent olfactory tests (Sniffin’ Sticks), gustatory (taste sprays) assessment depressive (Beck Depression Inventory). Information duration was also collected. <b><i>Results:</i></b> combined olfactory/gustatory had higher depression scores than only controls, no significant difference found between controls. Anosmia patients, but not hyposmia exhibited Among various causes disorders, from posttraumatic group other (sinonasal, idiopathic, postinfectious). Multiple linear regression analyses suggested that reduced function associated enhanced in (<i>B</i> = −0.326, <i>t</i> −2.294, <i>p</i> 0.02) all −0.374, −2.550, 0.017). <b><i>Discussion/Conclusion:</i></b> Simultaneously decreased input olfaction gustation seems additive effect exacerbation emotional dysfunction. Early intervention should be considered for clinical practice.
